Christmas is Coming

We had a very late Thanksgiving this year, which means that now we are that much closer to Christmas! Only 20 days away to be precise! Have you started your decorating yet? Be honest- did you do it before Turkey Day? I won’t tell anyone. At Home on the Range, we love Christmas decor, and we ESPECIALLY love rustic Christmas decor. Whether you already have your home decked out in holiday glory, or you haven’t quite gotten around to starting yet, here are some great rustic holiday decor ideas to get you going (or keep you going).

I really love the rustic crate centerpiece in this room, but what I love the MOST here is the little tree in the olive bucket. I’ve seen galvanized tubs used as tree stands before, which I thought was pretty creative, but I think the tiny tree in the olive bucket is even better! So cute and so rustic!

Vintage sleds are great for rustic holiday decorating, and we see them used pretty frequently here in the mountains. I think that adding a holiday wreath to the sled is a great idea!

This lovely little corner piece brings in four of my favorite rustic decor items: buckets, twigs, pinecones and birch/aspen logs. This is a great piece for the corner because it will add depth, height, and texture to your space, and really give a natural Christmas feel to the room!

Once again, here are a few of my favorite things! This time, they took logs and pinecones and added burlap, mason jars and candles! This centerpiece is so beautiful. It brings nature right into the house using simple, easy to find items.

This advent calendar is ADORABLE. If you have the time and the craft skills, this would be the perfect addition to any rustic Christmas home. All you really need is a big picture frame, tiny buckets, and twine, and voila!

Just In! At the Showroom

There is a lot going on right now at Home on the Range! We have a lot of great projects that we’re working on, and we have also had about 10 different shipments of new inventory come in over the past few weeks! There is some really incredible stuff that we’ve been unpacking, and today I wanted to share a few of my favorites (but by no means an exhaustive list). All of these pieces are available for purchase right now at the showroom, along with so much more. Come in and see all of our beautiful new things for yourself!

This is a barrel- and an end table! I love this sooooo much, it looks even better in person. It’s great because normal barrels are big- they just can’t really be used for tables unless you get super creative, but this barrel is the perfect size for between living room chairs, or as an accent in a bedroom.

We have all sorts of different twig lamps, in different sizes with different shades and colors. These lamps are great because they are rustic and natural and perfect for mountain lodges and cabins without being too hokey.

We also have all sorts of new hurricanes and candle holders! This tall cylindrical hurricane is one of my favorites because it can add an unassuming style to just about any space, and it’s easy to match with almost anything that is already existing.

We have mirrors galore! We don’t even have enough places to hang them all! This hand finished carved mirror with gold accents makes a great statement.

Here’s another example of the variety of accessories we have right now- these come in three different bright (but still distressed) colors- red, yellow and blue! We had one customer in earlier this week who commented how neat these would be incorporated into a tiered porch arrangement. What do you think?

We have carried these vintage bottles for a while now, but they just seem to keep coming in more unique and interesting every time! They even come with dirt and liquid still in them and we clean them out before putting them on the floor- that’s how you know they’re for real!

Fun with Faux Fur: The Product Post

Earlier this week we talked about faux fur, why we love it, and where to put it. Today, we’re going to share with you some of our very favorite faux fur products! All of these products are either in stock at the showroom or can be ordered by simply contacting us!

This faux fur beaver neck roll would be a perfect finishing touch for many different styles of bedding ensemble. Whether you have a comfy lodge collection or an elegant chalet feel, this neck roll will fit right in. Did I mention that it’s probably the softest and most comfortable thing in the whole world?

What I love about the coyote faux fur is how natural and woodsy it looks. While other faux furs can be dressed up or down, this one is pretty casual, and perfect for rustic environments. We currently have a couple of these throws on hand in the showroom, come snuggle up in one!

How cute is this faux fur trimmed stocking? This is the perfect accessory for Christmas in the mountains- it would look great in a condo, home, second home, Santa’s sleigh… whatever really!

These faux fur trimmed soft goods are some of my favorites. I love the tweed fabric, the lodge motif embroidery, and, of course, the faux fur on the edges adds so much to these pieces! While they don’t necessarily work amazingly for drying dishes, they sure look great!

Fun with Faux Fur

We love using faux fur in home decor. We’ve talked about it briefly before in other posts, but today faux fur gets a post all its own… maybe because it’s suddenly so cold outside! That fluffy, soft, warm texture is more than welcome in any mountain home, and there are more ways to incorporate it than you might think!

Throws and pillows are the most common way to bring snuggly faux fur into your space. Depending on your style, you can choose from a variety of colors and textures- you can select faux animals ranging from Coyotes to Snow Leopards to Chinchillas!

Beaver and Black Bear are a couple of our favorites when it comes to softness, but we also love Coyote and Raccoon for their rustic style, and Tibetan Fox for its classy elegance.

Used as an accent in a living room, faux fur brings an instant inviting warmth to the space.

While you by no means HAVE to use faux fur specifically, there are a few reasons that we do suggest it. The first is that you have a fantastic selection of colors and textures- for instance, I don’t think that real Tibetan Fox blankets are very widely available. Second, the price point is generally much better when it comes to faux fur, and the results are the same every time. If you need a match or a replacement, you can get one without any hassle. Third, this probably isn’t a huge issue, but there are a lot of people out there with allergies to animals and animal fur. This is a main reason that we generally suggest our clients order down alternative as opposed to down pillows- while you might not be allergic, there is a possibility that guests or family members might!

Looks We Love: Ralph Lauren

At Home on the Range, we are kind of obsessed with Ralph Lauren fabrics. I think it’s safe to say that. Not only are the colors beautiful, the styles timeless, and the materials top notch, but many of the collections fit seamlessly into our Rugged Elegant mountain design visions. Though many of the patterns stay the same (because, like we already talked about, they are timeless), Ralph is always ahead of the curve when it comes to colorways. There are hundreds of different Ralph Lauren patterns and colorways, but our favorites tend to be wools and linens, plaids, casual florals and native prints. Below are some beautiful pictures that show the diversity of these lovely textiles, and also one of our new favorites!

This sofa incorporates a really creative mix of different fabrics that are perfect for a rustic and maybe slightly eclectic mountain lodge.

The neutral hues in this living room, and I can’t even imagine how lovely it must feel to curl up on that sofa! The mix of faux furs and wool would be heavenly!

This is a great example of a little bit different way to use Ralph Lauren textiles- rather than in just pillows, bedding or upholstery, here they have used one of Ralph’s Sacred Mountain blanket fabrics for draperies, and another Trading Post collection fabric for the bench cushion. Love this!

Though there are so many different ways to incorporate Ralph Lauren fabrics into your room, I think that bedding is probably one of the most delightful- you can’t beat the heaviness and warmth of wool on cold nights!

Last but not least, we wanted to share one of the patterns from the newest collection that just came out this summer, which we absolutely adore!

Fall Favorites

Well, I think that fall is actually almost over here in Steamboat Springs, CO (too soon, too soon!), but it even though it was a short one, it was an incredibly beautiful one! We had reds, golds, oranges, yellows, burgundies, peaches, pretty much any warm color tone that you can imagine. Then, picture those colors dusted with a layer of brand new snow- it was spectacular! As we begin to watch the leaves flutter to the ground, and as the air changes from “a little bit crisp” to “see your breath all day”, we wanted to take a chance to share some of our fall favorites this year- things that make us love and appreciate the season! And, though mother nature has decided that fall is on it’s way out here in Steamboat, the season continues through Thanksgiving so at least there’s still plenty of time to take advantage of fall decorating and pumpkin spice lattes!

Acorns are such a great little decorating tool. They really help to bring the outdoors in with a neutral color and natural feel.

Perfect Plaids

Don’t you just think there’s something about this time of year that makes you want to start settling down and cuddling up? All of a sudden, fires and warm blankets seem a lot more inviting than pools and beach towels, and boots become a much better option than sandals. Now, try to associate that feeling with a fabric.

What do you think of? Is it plaid? That’s what I thought.

While there are some “summer plaids” that do exist in the world, my guess is that in general when you think of plaid fabrics you associate them with things like wool, crisp air, mountain retreats, and, maybe, even Pumpkin Spice lattes.

Plaids are fantastic fabrics that can be used to warm up a cold space and contribute a needed pattern, and at the same time incorporate and bring out the other colors in the room. It can be dressed up for a classy hunting lodge feel, or dressed down for a rambling mountain cabin. You can use it in bedding, upholstery, wall covering, window treatments, accessories and just about anything else you could think of. When it comes right down to it, plaid seems to be the Jack Of All Fabrics.

Here are some great ideas on using “winter plaids” that really show how versatile this print can be.

I love the colors on this pillow, they look so fresh but still warm!

The greens and browns here compliment the reclaimed headboard and create a unique combination that looks fashionable and comfortable.

7 Fantastic Uses for Hair on Hide

Using hair on hide (leather with the fur still on it) in design can be a fun, funky, rugged, rustic or classic way to add style to a room or furniture piece. Traditionally, hair on hide leather is applied to things like chair backs, the exteriors of upholstery pieces, or rugs… but, recently we have seen it used in so many more creative ways! When used in the right way and in the right space, hair on hide can add that exact little bold and catchy “something extra” that you’ve been striving for. Here are seven great examples of creative and traditional ways to use hair on hide in interior design:

1. Hair on Hide Tub: I have never seen anything like this! The hair on hide bath tub gives this bathroom an instantly chic and rustic modern look.

2. Hair on Hide rug: The hair on hide rug is a pretty standard and traditional use for a cow hide, but what I really like about this room in particular is that they used different hides to cover the entire floor, and also added other features like native rugs and leather pieces to give this space an eclectic western vibe.

3. Hair on Hide Barstools: Look how the hair on hide stools (and antler chandelier) give an instant western feel to this otherwise very traditional (and non-western) kitchen!

4. Hair on Hide Ottoman: I love this room. The soft and natural texture of the cowhide pair beautifully with the warm tones of the other fabrics, making this living room seem comfortable and cozy despite the incredibly high ceilings and open floor plan.

5. The Hair on Hide Chair: This is a traditional use of hair on hide, and how beautiful is this chair? It would look perfect in a masculine office, or it could add a subtle and classy vintage flair to any mountain home.

6. The Hair on Hide Dresser: This piece is VERY western, and it would not fit in just anywhere- it would need to find the perfect space and combination of other furniture pieces in order for it not to look over-done. That said, I love the contrast of the dark wood with the light hide, and I also love the nail head trim and ring pulls on the drawers!

7. Hair on Hide All Over: Okay okay, this one’s a little bit over the top… haha, get it? “Over the top?”!!! But seriously, this restaurant takes hair on hide to a whole new level. What do you think about the use of the cowhide on the walls and ceiling? Too crazy or fun and unique?

Among the Aspens

If you follow our blog regularly, then you know how fond we are of bringing the outdoors in when it comes to design. There is nothing more rustic than the outdoors, nothing that says “lodge” more than the forest itself. One of the most unique and striking ways to bring the outdoors into your home is by using actual trees. Yes, you can ACTUALLY bring the forest inside your house. While you can do this with all sorts of log furniture, flooring, beams, etc, one of the most unique ways that I have seen to do it is by using aspen trees. Aspen trees are gorgeous, and also characteristic of the Rocky Mountains- they are a hallmark of the beautiful place that we call home, so why not make them a hallmark in your own home? Here are some ingenious ways to use aspens when creating your own indoor forest:

Aspen Wall- Okay so this room doesn’t really look like it’s in the mountains, I don’t think you would be wanting to sit under a twig ceiling when the snow started falling! But, I do love the use of aspens as a dividing wall in this space!

Aspen Beams- This may be the neatest thing I have ever seen! I actually don’t know that I’ve ever seen anything similar to the aspen woodwork in this room. The different shapes and textures of the aspen logs make for a beautiful and rugged looking space.

Aspen Bed- These full sized aspen trees (minus the leaves) add a rustic sense of depth and height to the room, while the chandelier helps keep it classy and remind you that you are in fact in a bedroom and not the woods.

The Aspen Theater- I can’t tell if these are real aspen trees or not- maybe they’re birch trees? Maybe they’re fake trees? Either way, they’re so creative! Even tucked away into a room with no windows, there’s no forgetting that you’re in the mountains here!

Aspen Shelf- I love the use of aspen trunks in these shelves. Using furniture pieces made from aspens will help incorporate the look into your space without having to make it a focal point.

The Aspen Hall- Look at this one! This might be one of my favorites! Covering an entire wall in your home with aspen logs would be a bold step, but if you were willing to take the leap it would be a beautiful statement!
