Parallel trends are often seen in fashion and interior design as both are closely linked with  color and style forecasts and both use the latest fabrics in their creations.  In Steamboat we tend to be a little less “glitzy” and a little more rustic than other areas but we love to incorporate components of the latest trends into our design.  The color blue, and the use of leather is hot this year and that works beautifully with our Western heritage!

Pictured below  is a bunkhouse sitting room we did here in Steamboat with denims, leathers and red accents

And here is how it translates into fashion!

Here are some other examples of the parallel between  fashion and interior design:

Dick Gentry from Wesco Fabrics just hosted a very well attended window treatment webinar where his workroom manager, Joanne, showcased some  of the creative window treatments she had designed based on runway fashion. http://www.gentryconnects.com/2012/03/haute-couture-window-treatments.html

The next High Point Furniture Market is coming up at the end of April, and one market correspondent took notes on top trends from the recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Week that she thinks will also find their way into the furnishings industry.  As I mentioned above, we may not be as high style here in Steamboat, but there are a number of components that will work well in Western interiors, from the leathers to the furs and feathers!

Fresh uses of leather like Peter Som brought into this creative ensemble are also expected to appear in furnishings.

Fur and feathers—seen on this Prabal Gurung ensemble and others—are two unexpected elements helping to bring texture to fashion and home design.

Visit highpointmarket.org to learn about all the expected parallels in fashion and interior design trends. We’re excited to see how these are re-imagined for furnishings—aren’t you?

Ottomans are extremely versatile pieces in home design. They not only give you a place to prop up your feet and add a decorative touch to a room, but they also can be used as coffee tables or storage pieces. Here, we’ve compiled a number of examples of ottomans as a gem in both function and form:

At Home on the Range, we’ve used ottomans as coffee tables in multiple Western interior design projects—they just work so well!

This is a fun little ottoman seat in a closet:

Another smart place for an ottoman is at the foot of a bed, like in this chic bedroom design.

This tufted ottoman is another great example of an ottoman as a coffee table.

How have you incorporated ottomans in your home? Leave a comment to share, or feel free to post pictures of your own versatile ottomans on our Facebook page. We’d love to see them!

Animal prints may seem like a design trend but our view is that they are a timeless design element!  When you look at at centuries old manor houses in England, chateaux in France and Bavarian hunting lodges, what will you find?  Animal prints and rugs.  Animal prints add an eclectic touch to everything from traditional interiors to cutting edge contemporary design.  Here are some fun illustrations of various ways designers have incorporated animal prints into their rooms.

William Eubanks is known for creating timeless interiors, including this study featured on The Enchanted Home. Note the tiger stripes on the upholstery.

Renowned designer Bunny Williams also uses animal prints, including the leopard print pillows in this living space.

Of course there are many modern uses for animal prints as well. Here are several of our favorite examples:

Tobi Fairley uses animal prints as decorative accents.

We love the use of the zebra hand towel in this powder bath!

This photo shows a fun use of a cowhide juxtaposed with colorful yellow furniture.

The zebra rug makes a huge statement on the floor of this contemporary bathroom.

As a Colorado interior design firm, we know that good space planning is at the heart of a good design. We also understand that laying out a space can be difficult for the untrained eye. So, when we came across one of the best space planning guides we’ve seen, we knew we had to share the article! This Houzz piece on “mastering the open floor plan” includes a number of great tips, including:

Determine the purpose of your spaces and think about how many people could be in the room at one time.  In this room we created one  grouping around the fireplace and television and another small conversation grouping facing the view.

Think about which spaces should be close to one another, like the kitchen and dining areas.

It’s also really important to consider the paths from space to space; you need to allow room for people to walk around easily.

Check out the Houzz article for more great space-planning tips. Are you interested in a thoughtful layout for your Western-style home? Contact Home on the Range today.

As you’ve seen in previous blog posts, at Home on the Range we like to collaborate with wonderful artisans and artists who help add a special touch to the homes we work on .    Susan Schiesser is one of our favorite artists.   Her art works beautifully in our more eclectic and contemporary homes but is versatile enough to transition into more traditional homes as well.

One beautiful piece by Susan is sitting on the fireplace mantel in this warm rustic contemporary  living room.

In this eclectic dining room by Home on the Range, another of Susan’s paintings adds a great splash of color and complements the burnt orange fabric on the Berman Rosetti dining chairs and the colors in the chandelier from Crystal Glass Studios.

As Susan describes on her website, her work often contains influences from nature and the environment, and her style is “contemporary realism.” Here are a few more works by Susan that illustrate the dynamic nature of her art:

With the New Year here, many people are wondering what 2012 will bring in terms of home design trends. This is a big year for color, so here are some of the popular hues you should know about:

Pantone’s Color of the Year
Pantone named Tangerine Tango its Color of the Year for 2012. The orange shade works well in rustic interiors. Here  you can see a Western-style design by Susan Howard of Home on the Range with an orange rug that livens up the space.

Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2012
Benjamin Moore developed four different palettes full of trendy shades for 2012. We especially like this space, which includes natural hues from its Earth & Sky palette.

Sherwin-William’s Colormix™ 2012
Sherwin-Williams also made four palettes for 2012; these were based around earthy tones of neutrals, reds, greens and blues.

Let us know which colors you’re most excited about for Western design in 2012.

At Home on the Range, we enjoy working with talented artisans to help design unique interiors. We’ve worked with John Gallis of Norseman Designs West on number of projects, and we’re always thrilled with his designs and craftsmanship. John and his team create works of art rather than just furniture pieces.   Each piece  makes a statement in  the homes where we have placed them.

Hi everyone – I was on a cruise for the holidays and we didn’t get this post published so you will need to keep these holiday decorating inspirations for next year! Here are beautiful photos of holiday décor perfect for not only Western homes but eclectic enough to use in a variety of environments:

We love the use of the snow shoes above the mantel along with the Christmas decorations in this space – together they create a mountain-style Christmas feel.

These neutrals sparkle beautifully, and we like the snow shoe photo, too!

Natural materials, old-world craftsmanship and unique architectural elements are trademarks of New Mexico Territorial style. Although most often found in the American Southwest and the Texas Hill Country, the use of reclaimed materials, stone and energy-efficient straw bale and adobe construction create an aesthetic that lends itself to the Rocky Mountain region as well.

The straw bale construction is not only a signature component of adobe-style homes, but its soft lines and undulating surfaces blend beautifully with the reclaimed fir timbers, terra cotta floors and textured plaster walls.

“Nichos” are both practical and decorative elements in adobe architecture and were originally designed to accommodate everything from built-in cabinets to religious artifacts. We incorporated a large arched nicho into the upper hall of this New Mexico Territorial style home to hold a beautiful antique cabinet with a rich aqua painted finish. Native American rugs, like the one you see on the wall, are a great way to blend the New Mexico style into a Rocky Mountain home.

Below is another example of incorporating “nichos” in New Mexico Territorial design.

The use of antique shutters inset into the walls as windows creates both function and interest.

Reclaimed wood bookshelves add interest to the Kiva-style fireplace wall and provide a wonderful framework for displaying a collection of books and pottery.

The shady colonnaded back porch with its colorful Mexican blankets and pillows provides the perfect spot to enjoy the view while staying out of the hot mid-day sun.
