While at the recent Design Bloggers Conference in LA,   I was completely inspired by the story of Lisa Robison, the founder of Dwell with Dignity  and designer Kim Turner who joined Lisa in her amazing endeavor to change peoples’ lives for the better.   I want to share their story here on our blog because it is a testament to the power of design and to the power of individual determination.  Lisa’s story propelled me to come back to Steamboat and contact Habitat for Humanity to explore ways the design community in Steamboat can help with their projects.  http://www.routtcohabitat.org/  .   Below is some information on Lisa and Dwell with Dignity that came from their website.

“Founder, Lisa Robison, is an Interior Designer who has spent the past decade raising her children and immersing herself in all things design-related.   Her desire to give back to her community and to pursue her passion for design culminated in the concept of Dwell with Dignity. Her strong belief that good design improves ones quality of life (and the “nest egg” birthday gift from her husband) resulted in the incorporation of this non-profit foundation in April of 2009.”

“Dwell with Dignity is a non-profit group of Interior Designers and volunteers dedicated to creating soothing, inspiring homes for families struggling with homelessness and poverty. We provide and install home interiors for families that include furnishings and art, bedding and kitchen supplies, and food in the pantry.”

Dwell with Dignity is a wonderful organization that has changed many people’s lives for the better since it began in spring 2009. Before and after photos of their design projects can be seen online, including this home for a family of four…

And this one for a mom and her young son…

Can you imagine being a child who was sleeping on an old mattress on the floor in a run down apartment having their life changed so dramatically by being able to come home to a safe haven where they can have a sense of pride in their surroundings.   Visit dwellwithdignity.org to find out more, and be sure to also check out their blog.

Lynne Bier, principal and lead designer at Home on the Range, attended the Design Bloggers Conference earlier this week and was happy to meet a number of people in the industry. It’s always nice to put a face to a company you do business with, which is exactly what happened when Lynne got to talk to Patrick Bradshaw of Wesley Hall Furniture.

At Home on the Range, we always love how Wesley Hall stays on top of the design industry in terms of quality and style. As described on their company website:

“Over the last 20 years, Wesley Hall has become a key manufacturer in the upper segment of the upholstered furniture market. We attribute our success to an unwavering commitment to providing excellent service, quality, fashion, and value.”

Here are some of our favorite upholstered furniture pieces from Wesley Hall:

They have many beautiful chairs, including these four options:

This swivel fits into smaller spaces but is still really comfortable!

A fun fabric can really change the look of this chair - we love the chair both ways.

Here is a similar style in a solid. It also looks great in leather.

We love the mix of wood and fabric on this fun accent chair.

This sofa has a great transitional frame:

This comes in both a loveseat size and a sofa size

And we love the curve on these ottomans:

Which of these pieces stand out to you?

Home on the Range designer Lynne Bier enjoyed the Design Bloggers Conference last week and wants to spotlight renowned interior designer Bunny Williams, who gave the keynote speech on the final day of the conference.

Lynne Bier and Bunny Williams

If you’ve been following the conference buzz on Twitter, you may have seen how much everyone loved Bunny Williams’ talk  – so much that Bunny received a standing ovation!   She has a wise outlook on the industry, and her interior design style is a marriage of beauty and function. Blending modern and traditional pieces in her design, Bunny strives for—and achieves—timeless spaces that are comfortable and lived in, characteristics that are easily seen in the design of her own apartment:

Here are a few of the points from Bunny’s talk that Lynne Bier says really spoke to her:

Select several quality pieces of furniture and you will have them forever

Stay neutral on your main upholstered pieces and then you can use pillows and throws to change things up when you want to add a new touch

Study everything you can, travel for new ideas and stay organized.  Design takes a lot of work and focus

Give back to the community and mentor young designers

Mix in pieces from different eras and different countries to keep your design interesting

This quote from Eugene Kane Jr. expresses the important things to remember in life:

“Live your truth. Express your love. Share your enthusiasm. Take action towards your dreams. Walk your talk. Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering.”

On this Thanksgiving we, the design team at Home on the Range, are thankful for many things:

  • The amazing community in which we live, where giving and volunteering are a way of life
  • Our loyal customers and clients who have kept us busy and thriving through these tough economic times
  • The inspiration we are able to draw from the spectacular mountain scenery we are privileged to see every day
  • The network of friends we have developed through our business relationships
  • The ability to do what we love every day of our life and make a living from it!
  • Our friends and family who support us and put up with our crazy hours
  • Our design clients who trust us to create surroundings that embody their dreams

May we never take one moment for granted

An important home design event has been going on in North Carolina throughout this week: The High Point Furniture Market, which is a biannual trade show featuring the latest in home furnishings. Known as “the world’s home for home furnishings,” the event covers “10 million square feet of show space” with “tens of thousands of new product introductions,” according to the High Point Market website. Many attendees from the design world have been posting products and scenes from the event, so we’ve compiled a few of our favorite pieces to share.

We love this new rug from Classic Home; it makes us smile when we look at it!

We spotted a Luna Bella sconce on Pure Style Home that offers texture and visual interest galore.

And this Chain Link Table from Pearson Home would look beautiful in a rustic Western home.

Which of these is your favorite? Contact Home on the Range in Steamboat Springs, CO to find out how to purchase new products introduced at High Point Market.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the design community has taken to helping the cause in a variety of ways.

The first is by developing a number of pink products with partial proceeds going to breast cancer research, including BoConcept’s “Running Ribbon” cup and the Pink Swan Project by Suite New York.

Another way designers are getting involved is by volunteering time and materials to redecorate chemotherapy rooms. RoomsThatRock4Chemo is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that is devoted to creating positive and uplifting spaces that spiritually support cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy by revamping bland spaces into vibrant, warm and peaceful environments.

Breast cancer patients should be surrounded by things that soothe and promote relaxation, including color, and greens and blues in particular tend to be calming. In fact, one article notes that green “carries associations with nature, growth and recovery,” and another says that in chromotherapy, “blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain.”

This color psychology explains why we’ve seen blue and green appear in many chemotherapy rooms, whether in the furniture, fixtures or walls themselves.

So, where pink helps raise money for cancer research, greens and blues help in the breast cancer treatment and recovery phases!

We love that people are supporting the cause by purchasing pink décor for their homes and that the interior design industry is instrumental in working with other colors that can also help pink in its fight against breast cancer – staying involved is the best way to make a difference!
