Yesterday morning I took a delivery of antler furniture and accessories at a client’s house.  Since then, I haven’t been able to get antlers off of my mind.  I just love them!  I don’t know exactly what it is that I love so much, maybe how natural they look,  or how no two are the same, or how many different uses they have.  Or maybe all of that and more.  To add to my day’s antler obsession, Pinterest started doing this new thing, have you seen it?  It’s called “Explore Your Interests”, and when you click on it, it puts all of the most common things you look at and pin into neat little categories.  And can you guess what showed up first on my interest categories?  I bet you can.

It was antlers.

So, I spent about half an hour looking at every picture of antlers that Pinterest had to offer to me.

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned how versatile antlers can be when used in decor, and it’s really true!  Not only do they have billions of different practical uses (ranging from furniture, to lighting, to hardware, to purely and simply decorative), they also transcend different design styles.  You will see antlers used everywhere from western and rustic decor all the way to contemporary and modern design.  It’s like the buck of all trades.  Haha.

Another plus of using antlers that some people don’t always know (and we mentioned this in a previous post), is that they are naturally shed, so no animals need to be harmed when they’re collected (unless they’re attached to a skull… then things change).  Every year deer and elk drop their antlers and grow new ones, kindly leaving them on the ground for us to put in our houses.  At least that’s what I like to think.

I was so inspired (and obsessed) by all of the antler beauty that I found that I wanted to share it with you all today!  I mixed some of my favorite ideas and styles from around the web and threw in some of the pieces that we have recently put into our clients’ homes.

I think mixing antlers in on a photo wall is a great idea!  It adds depth and interest and helps to break any rectangular monotony that might occur.

Okay, an antler towel hook… how great is that?  We’ve seen and used small antler hooks and hardware in the past, but I love how they used the whole antler here- it makes for a piece that is functional AND aesthetic!

We used this adorable little antler stool for a client recently (actually it was one of the things I installed yesterday that made me antler-crazy).   It’s small and unobtrusive, and adds a great statement in a little package.

Okay, so I realize there are a LOT of antlers in this picture.  But I like it.  I like how they’re used all the way down the hall, it creates a neat visual effect when you look at it this way, and would also provide a linear look that complemented the beams when viewed from straight on.  Just make sure no tall clumsy people walk down this hallway!

Here’s another creative use for antlers!  We don’t normally use tie-backs on drapes, but I love this idea.  Again, it provides that natural woodsy look without overwhelming anything.  A little bit goes a long way!

You can’t really tell from the picture that this is a mirror, but it is!  It’s a beautiful mirror!  This is another piece that was delivered to us yesterday, and it looks fantastic.  We are putting it into a cabin near Lake Catamount here in Steamboat, where it is a perfect addition for our clients who love to hunt and fish.

Finally, here’s a beautiful picture of antlers just being antlers.  I love how they are interspersed with vintage mercury glass for a super unique tablescape.  There is just so much you can do with antlers to spice up your decor!

Trunks are wonderful.  Especially old trunks.  Not tree trunks (although we like those too), I’m talking about travel trunks.  In the past, people used to transport all of their belongings in trunks.  They were often very personal, and well traveled.  Like a person, each one had its own special story.

These days, people don’t travel with trunks anymore.  We prefer things with handles, wheels, and zippers that fit just perfectly into overhead compartments.  While trunks may have lost their significance in the travel world, they are increasing in popularity in the design world, and are far from obsolescent.  The use of old trunks (and new trunks, and new trunks that are made to look like old trunks) has been gaining momentum in interior design, thanks to the current re-purposing and upcycling trends.   Rather than holding a persons’ dearest possessions, you will now instead find them incorporated into furniture layouts.

We have seen trunks re-purposed into all sorts of things, mainly tables of one kind or another.

Old trunks make fantastic coffee tables, and you get an added bonus of extra storage as well!

If you can find a smaller trunk, or even a pair of them, you can have a great set of matching end tables.

We have also seen thinner trunks put on stands and used as entry tables and sideboards… which we love!

One of the most creative things that we’ve come across is a trunk-turned-bench or ottoman.  It really transforms the piece into something new and different!

We have quite a few different trunks in stock right now at the showroom- in all sorts of sizes, from all sorts of places, and with all sorts of stories!  Come in today to find one to incorporate into your very own unique story!

At Home on the Range, we are lucky to get to work on projects of all shapes and sizes, from massive second homes to one-bedroom condos.  Each space has its own personality, and each project takes on its own story.  But, though all of our projects are beautiful and unique in their own ways, they all have one thing in common: they’re stationary.

So we daydream.

I have always been captivated by travel, and by the freedom that comes along with it.  RVs and campers have embodied this freedom for decades, and the idea of creating a “home on wheels” just absolutely delights me!  It’s like that very same feeling of freedom spills over into the design aspects- you can do just about anything you want!  I love the thought of making something so small but perfect in every way.  I love the thought of embodying a feeling in a space, and my favorite renovated campers do just that: they pinpoint America, the West, travel, comfort, and craftsmanship, and then drive them home all in one tiny little box.

Our good friend Ralph Lauren (well, we don’t know him, but we love his home goods) is a camper renovation master.  My Airstream daydreams mostly feature his designs.  The detail in his rolling rooms is minute, and I honestly think I could probably live in one of these.

I love the woodwork here, and the mix and match fabrics.  It gives me the feeling of riding in an upscale version of a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail.

Who WOULDN’T want to take a fishing trip in this baby?  Again, every detail has been perfected, and a solid “Masculine Modern Lodge” style has been achieved beautifully.  See the snowshoes in the back?  Love those!  I also love the subtle colors in this camper.

This is a little picture, but you can see how wonderfully Western it is!  The use of reclaimed wood with bold reds and blues make this camper a cowboy’s paradise!

Here’s another cowboy camper.  My favorite thing here is the way they hung the curtains, but look at the other elements as well- they just work!

I love the idea of making the bed into a nook with the use of curtains.  Also, the fairy lights make this space magical!

In this renovated bus, they really made use of the light from all of the windows.  This space just feel so comfortable, clean and airy!  I would love to drive around the country in this!

My favorite thing about this camper is the barn door.  Just wanted to share that.

So this little camper is provably too heavy to actually drive anywhere, but it’s beautiful nonetheless!  Look at the stained glass, and the hardware on the door!  Such a neat little space!

This is the view from my window today.

It doesn’t show signs of stopping!  Kind of makes a person want to curl up in a warm place with a blanket, a good book, and a cup of hot tea, doesn’t it?  In a cozy little hideaway?  Full of pillows and cushions?

Yep, that would be perfect.

We have seen some pretty creative reading nooks in our time, but our very favorites seem to be of the rustic variety.  There’s just something about the mix of materials that make rustic nooks that much more cozy and inviting.

I’m pretty sure that I could actually spend the rest of the winter in one of these little utopias.  Couldn’t you?

More Christmas fun today!  We are just days away from our favorite holiday, and today we wanted to share something that we thought would bring a little smile to your day!  There are ALL SORTS of Christmas trees, and everyone seems to have their very own special methods and traditions for decorating them.  Some people use white lights, some used colored lights.  Some people use tinsel, and some use garland.  Some people use ladders, and some people use books.  Some people use tutus.

Wait, what?

Yes, that’s right, today we are going to be sharing some of the craziest and most over the top trees that we could find.  Tell us what you think!  Which one is your favorite?  Which one do you think is the most creative?  The most outrageous?  The most normal?  Share with us!

We had a very late Thanksgiving this year, which means that now we are that much closer to Christmas!  Only 20 days away to be precise!  Have you started your decorating yet?  Be honest- did you do it before Turkey Day?  I won’t tell anyone.  At Home on the Range, we love Christmas decor, and we ESPECIALLY love rustic Christmas decor.  Whether you already have your home decked out in holiday glory, or you haven’t quite gotten around to starting yet, here are some great rustic holiday decor ideas to get you going (or keep you going).

I really love the rustic crate centerpiece in this room, but what I love the MOST here is the little tree in the olive bucket.  I’ve seen galvanized tubs used as tree stands before, which I thought was pretty creative, but I think the tiny tree in the olive bucket is even better!  So cute and so rustic!

Vintage sleds are great for rustic holiday decorating, and we see them used pretty frequently here in the mountains.  I think that adding a holiday wreath to the sled is a great idea!

This lovely little corner piece brings in four of my favorite rustic decor items: buckets, twigs, pinecones and birch/aspen logs.  This is a great piece for the corner because it will add depth, height, and texture to your space, and really give a natural Christmas feel to the room!

Once again, here are a few of my favorite things!  This time, they took logs and pinecones and added burlap, mason jars and candles!  This centerpiece is so beautiful.  It brings nature right into the house using simple, easy to find items.

This advent calendar is ADORABLE.  If you have the time and the craft skills, this would be the perfect addition to any rustic Christmas home.  All you really need is a big picture frame, tiny buckets, and twine, and voila!

You may remember when we did a post a while back about using Google Sketchup for design and construction concepts.  Well, today I wanted to share something VERY exciting with you.  One of the rooms that we put in Sketchup to help our client visualize the space and make decisions on finishes is now on its way to completion.  I received a photo of it the other day, and I was floored at how amazingly similar it looked to our Sketchup rendering.  Take a look below!

This is the original image as it was built in Sketchup- we used the program to build this room from the plans to help choose finishes, furniture and accessories.

This is a photorealistic rendering that we did of the original image to make it more realistic and help our client visualize how it was really going to look:

Our client approved the finishes, wood, etc, and the building and installing began.  This is a photo of the progress of the room so far:

unnamed

Isn’t that amazing?  Remember, in the first and second images, the room in the third photo was not in existence!  The first two images are 100% computer generated.  This really goes to show how far technology and design have come, and the possibilities of how far we can go with tools like this are endless!  Just thought I would share!

Can you believe that it’s already Thanksgiving-eve?  Where has 2013 gone?  Even though it seems like the time has flown, we have so much to be thankful for this year.

We are thankful for our our clients, we have the best clients in the world!

We are thankful for each other.  Working with people who care about each other and what they do makes for a joyful job!

We are thankful for our design projects.  They keep us busy all the time and bring us to new and interesting places.

We are thankful to be able to live and work in a place as beautiful as Steamboat!

We are thankful for everyone who supports Home on the Range online and locally, you guys keep us going!  Thank you!

We have been busy bees this year with projects and events all over the country, and are ready to settle into the holidays!  If you, like us, have been running around like mad lately, you may be looking for some last minute decor ideas to add that extra little something to your Turkey Day celebration.  Look no further!  Today we have compiled a collection of ideas that will truly make yours a thankful table.

The Place Setting: Whether you plan on hosting 30 people or 4 people this Thanksgiving, it’s the presentation that makes all the difference.  The smallest details can leave a lasting impression.  Here are some great ideas for place settings, menus, and seating cards that are elegant, simple and perfectly seasonal!

The Sideboard:  Chances are, you will be employing a sideboard, buffet, or table of some kind to house your delicious feast.  Make it beautiful!  Adding color, height, and layers will really make it stand out and become a focal piece of the celebration, rather than just a stand to hold your food.

The Table:  Finally, let’s talk table!  Once again, it’s the little things that count here.  Hunt for natural items to include in your centerpiece.  Use placemats or chargers to add color or texture.  Incorporate candles and candle holders of all different shapes and sizes.  Bring out your best china.  It’s time to eat!

Last Thursday night, we were lucky enough to attend the ASID Color Theory seminar at the Denver Design Center.  The seminar was hosted by Decorative Materials, and the speaker was Feras Irikat, the Director of Design and Marketing for Stone and Pewter Accents.  It is safe to say we had our minds blown!  Feras was an incredible speaker who kept us interested and laughing the whole time, while also imparting invaluable knowledge about the psychology of color, and how we see and understand color in the world around us.  We learned SO many things, but today I just wanted to share a few of the very most interesting facts that Feras shared.

1.  No two people in the whole entire world see color in the same way.  The way each person views color is based off of a very specific mixture of the way their eyes see and their brains work, and also their individual life experiences.
Example: Nobody is born with a particular love or hate for a certain color.  Think about a color that you particularly dislike.  At first, you may think that it is just and ugly color,  but if you really think about WHY you don’t like that color, and consider where in your life you have seen that color and experiences you have had that would lead you to associate it with something negative, you might begin to understand why you have such strong feelings towards that color in particular.
Color Theory | Home on the Range

Image via Design Seeds

2.  Each color is made up of a certain number of “ingredients”.  The more ingredients that a color has, the more difficult it is to pinpoint, and the more it can change in different lights.
Example: In the seminar, we talked about the color Khaki.  Khaki has a lot of different ingredients, so when you look at inside under artificial lighting, it may just look beige.  Then, when you take it outside into a different light, it can look green, or yellow or any other number of things.  This is why with more neutral colors, you might think something is a perfect match for another color, then get it home and take it out and think “what in the world was I thinking? This looks terrible!!!” This is one reason that lighting is so important in design.
Color Theory | Home on the Range

Image via Google Images

3.  Colors have a huge impact on peoples’ emotions, and this is mostly due to how the brain sees them.
Example: The color red exudes a sense of power.  The color blue exudes a sense of trust and honesty.  Feras suggested that wearing one of these two colors to a job interview would trigger subconscious emotions in your future employer that would sway their opinion in a favorable way.
Color Theory | Home on the Range

Image via Pinterest

4.  The way we see color changes with age.
Example: Over time, our corneas begin to yellow.  This makes things that younger people see as blue instead take on a green hue.  This can be why different people may disagree on coordinating colors.
Color Theory | Home on the Range

Image via Forever Chic Style

5.  Color names have a huge impact on the way people respond to the color itself.
Example: In the seminar, Feras used the example of Vera Wang’s line of professional apparel for women.  One season, she presented a line with a beautiful and unique color called “lilac”.  It didn’t sell.  At all.  A couple of seasons later, the exact same color was presented in a new line, this time with name “monster”.  Everyone had to have it.  Isn’t it funny how that works?

6.  Our subconscious is more alert and aware of our surroundings than we think it is.
Example: Here is a REALLY interesting video on how our subconscious works in ways that we would never even know.  It’s a few minutes long, but so interesting and definitely worth a watch!

Altogether, we learned some really incredible things from the Color Theory seminar.  We would like to thank ASID, Decorative Materials, and also Feras Irikat from Stone and Pewter Accents for making this event possible!  You can find all of them on Facebook, and if you would like to see more about color and why we love it, visit us on Pinterest!
