Today we are lucky to have a guest post from Naomi Shaw on the differences between wallpaper and paint, and why you should know about them! Thanks Naomi!

New wallpaper and a fresh coat of paint are both excellent ways to make your walls look new and your décor shine. However, while they’ll both look great for a while, and they’ll both serve your décor if chosen properly, making the decision between wallpaper and paint isn’t always as easy as it seems.

Use these tips to help you decide what’s best for your home and your walls.

paint buckets

What’s the Weather Like?

The weather doesn’t have anything to do with what you choose to put in your home or on your walls, right? After all, you have air conditioning and you use the heater in your winter to keep your home comfortable and toasty.

The truth is that the weather in your area and around your home really does make a difference when it comes to whether you should choose paint or wallpaper.

Peeling Wallpaper

In areas where you have high humidity, wallpaper is likely to start peeling before you’re ready to replace it. So if you have a home in Florida where it is very humid, it is something you need to take into consideration, as it could start to pull away from the walls and turn into a costly repair job.

Paint isn’t as likely to be affected by weather as wallpaper, so in areas where humidity is very high, it’s generally a better choice. If you want texture, choose faux-finish or specialty paint.

Consider Your Walls

The material used to make your walls isn’t something you’ve likely considered too much unless you built your home. However, not all homes use the standard drywall that you see in most houses.

If you live in an older home, there’s a good chance you have plaster walls. While plaster is great for keeping your home a pleasant temperature and blocking sound, it doesn’t always hold up to wallpaper chemicals and the damage it can go through when the wallpaper needs to be stripped.

Plaster Walls | Home on the Range

Image via Locati Architects

If you’re going to put wallpaper up on your plaster walls, make sure they’re strong and you don’t use abrasive adhesive. Otherwise, sticking with paint is your best bet.

Selling Soon?

Perhaps you just bought your home and you’re planning to stay put for as long as you can imagine. If that’s the case, choosing wallpaper or paint doesn’t have much to do with what potential buyers might want.

If you’re considering putting your home on the market soon, however, you may want to reconsider wallpaper, as many buyers are concerned with mold buildup since wallpaper doesn’t “breathe” quite like paint. This is especially true if you live in a humid area.

Paint is also the more common choice among home buyers, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. Wallpaper might even negatively affect your ability to sell your home as quickly as you want to.

Deciding what’s right for your home, wallpaper or paint, is a personal decision, and it’s one you’ll have to live with. However, taking the factors presented above into consideration is important.

If you don’t make the right decision, you can always go the other way later on, but it could be a real inconvenience and expense that you wouldn’t otherwise have.

So, we’ve been experiencing a little warm snap here in Steamboat.  It’s weird because it seems that the rest of the country is experiencing the exact opposite- plunging temperatures, ice storms, snow snow snow.  But no, not here!  Here it has been in the high 30s, all the way up to the high 40s, which for this time of year is just crazy!  It’s awakening that Springtime me, that is itching to emerge from hibernation, stretch, feel the sunshine on my face, and put on a t shirt.  It’s a dangerous feeling, because I know that Mother Nature is just playing a trick on us, and that the groundhog did in fact see his shadow, and that yes, it is only February.  I know deep down that we are still in for at least another 6 weeks of real-life winter… but hey, I can dream can’t I?

My Springtime wishes led me to thinking about flowers blooming, green grass, and color, and that is what I want to share with you today!  There are so many beautiful gardens, and while the crocuses may not be popping out here for a little while yet, at least we can admire these pictures in the meantime!

Here’s a nice, normal (but still incredibly beautiful) garden to start us out.  I like how it’s not perfectly manicured, but just slightly overgrown.  Looks like you’re walking into a fairy tale!

Look at the tulips here!  Springtime!  I just love them.  Also, look at the topiary trees in the background… that’s neat!

Here’s a gorgeous desert garden.  The interspersed cacti add so much depth and texture, and the primary colors of the flowers jump out so much more in their stark surroundings of sand and rocks.

Succulents are very in right now in the world of planting, and modern decorating.  But these colors!  I have never seen all of these colors in succulents, such a happy bouquet!

Every so often, we like to share some of the things that we’re doing with you guys (actually we would like to do it more often, but we’re so busy actually DOING the things that we sometimes forget!).  In the past, we’ve talked about Google Sketchup and how we use it to help our clients visualize what their space can look like with different options.  Recently, we have been “Sketching Up” a LOT!  It has been a great tool for one of our out of town jobs (almost 4 hours from Steamboat), because we can see the house and try things out without actually having to be there.  We have also been using it for another project here in town to help a client visualize the fabrics, finishes, furniture and lighting that we have been proposing.  It has helped her so much to have an idea what things will actually look like in her own house and not just in a fabric book or on a furniture website.

Today we wanted to share some of our hard work with you!  It’s really amazing what we can do in Sketchup, from creating the smallest accessories (like mirrors and light fixtures),  to adding furniture, to building an entire house.  We can add the same rugs, wallpaper, paint colors, etc that we are planning on using to create a tiny little version of real life.

This is a 2d image of a 3d model of the library in our Steamboat project.  We are using this wallpaper, and proposing the rug, the cabinet on the right, and the art piece all as options.  Isn’t that neat to be able to see how things will look in your space before you even see them in person?

Google Sketchup | Home on the Range

The wine cabinet is an example of the abilities of Sketchup.  There is a 3d library that is free for Sketchup users to access and contribute to, but the furniture that we use and propose is generally so unique that we don’t have much of a chance of finding it, so we build it instead!  I built the wine cabinet in the 2D image above from the picture below.  You can see that it’s not exact, but I think it looks pretty close!  For pieces like large sofas and chairs, we will usually find something that is very close in style to what we are looking for, then apply our own fabric or leather to the piece.

Wine Cabinet | Home on the Range

Here is another example from the same house.  In this bar area, we are using really amazing and unique horn sconces (so unique that they’re almost one of a kind!)  Obviously we’re not going to find anything close to this in the generic 3d library, so we build it!  In the background though, you can see wine bottles that we got from the 3d library and arranged in the wine cabinet that we built from the plans.  It’s great to be able to mix our own creations with existing pieces to capture every little detail!  You can also see that we were able to apply stone to the back wall of the bar area and the arch in the hallway.  The possibilities are really endless!Google Sketchup | Home on the Range

Here’s a picture of the horn sconce in real life.  We used this picture and the dimensions that we got from the company to built the model in Sketchup.

Horn Sconce | Home on the Range

This is a picture of one of the bedrooms in the Bunkhouse of our out-of-town project.  This is a crazy house!  It was built over time, room by room, and the angles and heights and pitches definitely reflect that!  We used a combination of photos, Softplan files, and plans from the builder to piece this puzzle together in Sketchup, and have had so much fun coming up with creative ideas for our clients, who are excited to keep this place as funky as it always has been.

Bunkhouse | Home on the Range

Here’s our idea for the bedroom in the picture above!  How fun is this?  We are going to make a bunk loft area, accessible only by rope ladder!  Below, we’ll use a queen bed, and a built in closet with hanging and drawers to maximize space.  We’ll use gray reclaimed wood to keep the cabin vibe going strong.

Google Sketchup | Home on the RangeTo learn more about Sketchup, you can read our previous posts here: http://blog.homeontherangeinteriors.com/?s=sketchupWe are so excited about the possibilities that Sketchup has created for us, and we really enjoy sharing them with you!  It’s just amazing what we can do these days with technology, I still can’t believe that we can see a house complete with furniture, finishes and lighting before it’s even built, or see the results of a complete remodel before it’s even begun!

Yesterday morning I took a delivery of antler furniture and accessories at a client’s house.  Since then, I haven’t been able to get antlers off of my mind.  I just love them!  I don’t know exactly what it is that I love so much, maybe how natural they look,  or how no two are the same, or how many different uses they have.  Or maybe all of that and more.  To add to my day’s antler obsession, Pinterest started doing this new thing, have you seen it?  It’s called “Explore Your Interests”, and when you click on it, it puts all of the most common things you look at and pin into neat little categories.  And can you guess what showed up first on my interest categories?  I bet you can.

It was antlers.

So, I spent about half an hour looking at every picture of antlers that Pinterest had to offer to me.

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned how versatile antlers can be when used in decor, and it’s really true!  Not only do they have billions of different practical uses (ranging from furniture, to lighting, to hardware, to purely and simply decorative), they also transcend different design styles.  You will see antlers used everywhere from western and rustic decor all the way to contemporary and modern design.  It’s like the buck of all trades.  Haha.

Another plus of using antlers that some people don’t always know (and we mentioned this in a previous post), is that they are naturally shed, so no animals need to be harmed when they’re collected (unless they’re attached to a skull… then things change).  Every year deer and elk drop their antlers and grow new ones, kindly leaving them on the ground for us to put in our houses.  At least that’s what I like to think.

I was so inspired (and obsessed) by all of the antler beauty that I found that I wanted to share it with you all today!  I mixed some of my favorite ideas and styles from around the web and threw in some of the pieces that we have recently put into our clients’ homes.

I think mixing antlers in on a photo wall is a great idea!  It adds depth and interest and helps to break any rectangular monotony that might occur.

Okay, an antler towel hook… how great is that?  We’ve seen and used small antler hooks and hardware in the past, but I love how they used the whole antler here- it makes for a piece that is functional AND aesthetic!

We used this adorable little antler stool for a client recently (actually it was one of the things I installed yesterday that made me antler-crazy).   It’s small and unobtrusive, and adds a great statement in a little package.

Okay, so I realize there are a LOT of antlers in this picture.  But I like it.  I like how they’re used all the way down the hall, it creates a neat visual effect when you look at it this way, and would also provide a linear look that complemented the beams when viewed from straight on.  Just make sure no tall clumsy people walk down this hallway!

Here’s another creative use for antlers!  We don’t normally use tie-backs on drapes, but I love this idea.  Again, it provides that natural woodsy look without overwhelming anything.  A little bit goes a long way!

You can’t really tell from the picture that this is a mirror, but it is!  It’s a beautiful mirror!  This is another piece that was delivered to us yesterday, and it looks fantastic.  We are putting it into a cabin near Lake Catamount here in Steamboat, where it is a perfect addition for our clients who love to hunt and fish.

Finally, here’s a beautiful picture of antlers just being antlers.  I love how they are interspersed with vintage mercury glass for a super unique tablescape.  There is just so much you can do with antlers to spice up your decor!

Trunks are wonderful.  Especially old trunks.  Not tree trunks (although we like those too), I’m talking about travel trunks.  In the past, people used to transport all of their belongings in trunks.  They were often very personal, and well traveled.  Like a person, each one had its own special story.

These days, people don’t travel with trunks anymore.  We prefer things with handles, wheels, and zippers that fit just perfectly into overhead compartments.  While trunks may have lost their significance in the travel world, they are increasing in popularity in the design world, and are far from obsolescent.  The use of old trunks (and new trunks, and new trunks that are made to look like old trunks) has been gaining momentum in interior design, thanks to the current re-purposing and upcycling trends.   Rather than holding a persons’ dearest possessions, you will now instead find them incorporated into furniture layouts.

We have seen trunks re-purposed into all sorts of things, mainly tables of one kind or another.

If you can find a smaller trunk, or even a pair of them, you can have a great set of matching end tables.

We have also seen thinner trunks put on stands and used as entry tables and sideboards… which we love!

One of the most creative things that we’ve come across is a trunk-turned-bench or ottoman.  It really transforms the piece into something new and different!

We have quite a few different trunks in stock right now at the showroom- in all sorts of sizes, from all sorts of places, and with all sorts of stories!  Come in today to find one to incorporate into your very own unique story!

At Home on the Range, we are lucky to get to work on projects of all shapes and sizes, from massive second homes to one-bedroom condos.  Each space has its own personality, and each project takes on its own story.  But, though all of our projects are beautiful and unique in their own ways, they all have one thing in common: they’re stationary.

So we daydream.

I have always been captivated by travel, and by the freedom that comes along with it.  RVs and campers have embodied this freedom for decades, and the idea of creating a “home on wheels” just absolutely delights me!  It’s like that very same feeling of freedom spills over into the design aspects- you can do just about anything you want!  I love the thought of making something so small but perfect in every way.  I love the thought of embodying a feeling in a space, and my favorite renovated campers do just that: they pinpoint America, the West, travel, comfort, and craftsmanship, and then drive them home all in one tiny little box.

Our good friend Ralph Lauren (well, we don’t know him, but we love his home goods) is a camper renovation master.  My Airstream daydreams mostly feature his designs.  The detail in his rolling rooms is minute, and I honestly think I could probably live in one of these.

I love the woodwork here, and the mix and match fabrics.  It gives me the feeling of riding in an upscale version of a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail.

Who WOULDN’T want to take a fishing trip in this baby?  Again, every detail has been perfected, and a solid “Masculine Modern Lodge” style has been achieved beautifully.  See the snowshoes in the back?  Love those!  I also love the subtle colors in this camper.

This is a little picture, but you can see how wonderfully Western it is!  The use of reclaimed wood with bold reds and blues make this camper a cowboy’s paradise!

Here’s another cowboy camper.  My favorite thing here is the way they hung the curtains, but look at the other elements as well- they just work!

This is the view from my window today.

It doesn’t show signs of stopping!  Kind of makes a person want to curl up in a warm place with a blanket, a good book, and a cup of hot tea, doesn’t it?  In a cozy little hideaway?  Full of pillows and cushions?

Yep, that would be perfect.

We have seen some pretty creative reading nooks in our time, but our very favorites seem to be of the rustic variety.  There’s just something about the mix of materials that make rustic nooks that much more cozy and inviting.

I’m pretty sure that I could actually spend the rest of the winter in one of these little utopias.  Couldn’t you?

 Christmas time is here again!

We had a very late Thanksgiving this year, which means that now we are that much closer to Christmas!  Only 20 days away to be precise!  Have you started your decorating yet?  Be honest- did you do it before Turkey Day?  I won’t tell anyone.  At Home on the Range, we love Christmas decor, and we ESPECIALLY love rustic Christmas decor.  Whether you already have your home decked out in holiday glory, or you haven’t quite gotten around to starting yet, here are some great rustic holiday decor ideas to get you going (or keep you going).

I really love the rustic crate centerpiece in this room, but what I love the MOST here is the little tree in the olive bucket.  I’ve seen galvanized tubs used as tree stands before, which I thought was pretty creative, but I think the tiny tree in the olive bucket is even better!  So cute and so rustic!

Vintage sleds are great for rustic holiday decorating, and we see them used pretty frequently here in the mountains.  I think that adding a holiday wreath to the sled is a great idea!

This lovely little corner piece brings in four of my favorite rustic decor items: buckets, twigs, pinecones and birch/aspen logs.  This is a great piece for the corner because it will add depth, height, and texture to your space, and really give a natural Christmas feel to the room!

Once again, here are a few of my favorite things!  This time, they took logs and pinecones and added burlap, mason jars and candles!  This centerpiece is so beautiful.  It brings nature right into the house using simple, easy to find items.

This advent calendar is ADORABLE.  If you have the time and the craft skills, this would be the perfect addition to any rustic Christmas home.  All you really need is a big picture frame, tiny buckets, and twine, and voila!
