When designing a space, it’s essential to determine the best lighting scheme—one that provides both beauty and function. To do this, you must understand the different types of light that will play into the overall ambiance of a room.

The American Lighting Association offers a wonderful overview of lighting types: ambient, task and accent, taking you through the definitions of each type and the best fixtures to accomplish them.

Think of ambient lighting as the main source of lighting, the foundation for illumination throughout a space. Task lighting does exactly what it sounds like—provides the light you need to do tasks like reading, cooking, working and so on. Accent lighting highlights specific accessories or walls, most often drawing attention to important artwork or architectural details.

In the Western ranch-style space on the right, we incorporated a chandelier to provide ambient light and brought in table lamps for task lighting.

Visit the American Lighting Association’s helpful guide to learn more about these lighting basics.

Fireplaces play a major role in design schemes across the U.S., but they’re especially key in colder areas like Steamboat Springs. Here, fireplaces are just as important for warmth as they are for providing focal points in design, and with lows already in the 30s, we can’t think of anything cozier than sitting by a fireplace with the family enjoying nostalgic memories. Take a look at these spaces from the Home on the Range portfolio featuring blazing fireplaces inviting you to sit and stay awhile…

The fireplace in this mountain Arts and Crafts-style home is a focal point at the end of the room that beckons you.

The Western ranch-style house we designed features a fireplace wall in the living room complete with wood storage and television behind reclaimed wood doors…

…but the living room isn’t the only space that benefits from a fireplace. We also love these two fireplaces, which add warmth to a library and bedroom:

What do you love most about cozying up by the fire?

Home on the Range designers Lynne Bier and Susan Howard are always looking for high quality custom cabinets for their clients’ homes, and Rustic Woodworks of Steamboat Springs invariably comes out on top of the competition. There are many reasons why the artisans at Rustic Woodworks have custom-built the cabinetry for all but a few of the homes Lynne and Susan have worked on in Steamboat Springs in the past 15 years.  The craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited by the team at Rustic is rare in this day and age.

This master bath with reclaimed pine cabinets by Rustic Woodworks was featured in Colorado Homes and Lifestyles’ Kitchen and Bath issue.

Old barn board was used to create this vanity in a Ski-Home in Steamboat Springs that was featured in the Mountain Life section of Ski Magazine.

The antique white oak bookshelves with custom twig valances add a warm, cozy touch to the “hallway” ASID Crystal Award winner for Single Space Residential – Colorado Chapter 2010.

Whether the project is a rustic homestead ranch house with distressed painted finishes and old wood, an arts-and-crafts home with clean cherry cabinets, or a contemporary home where the cabinets have inset 3-form panels or steel accents, Rustic Woodworks executes the design and construction of the cabinets to exacting detail.

Read the Rustic Woodworks brochure or visit their website at rusticwoodworks.com to learn more about how they work and what they have to offer – or contact us at Home on the Range if you are building a home or doing a remodel and we can help guide you through the design process.

American designer Charles Eames said something that really stands true in terms of interior design: “The details are not the details. They make the design.” While it’s very important that a room look good when taken as a whole, it’s definitely the little things that tie the space together into a complete, cohesive look.

Home on the Range did the interior design for this Western, ranch-style home, and this particular photo offers a close-up view that really highlights the details; just look at how the rough-hewn wood and accessories—right down to the hat and lantern—help transform this into a decidedly rustic space.

Charles Eames could not have been more right. From the architectural moulding to the accessories and materials, every detail in a space contributes to creating and showcasing your personal style. If you’re looking for an interior designer in Steamboat Springs, CO who can beautify your space down to the details, contact Home on the Range. We’d be happy to help.

Working with amazing artists is just one of the great things we enjoy at Home on the Range. We’ve worked with Ann Wolff of Ann Wolff Glass Design quite a bit, and simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to showcase some of the work she’s done for us.

This is a beautiful custom wine room door by Ann Wolff that we put in a Mountain Contemporary house.

Ann Wolff Glass Design is a long-established Colorado custom glass studio. The work is site-specific and therefore sensitive to the requirements and aesthetic needs of the owner, architect and interior designer. Ann often uses fine European glass and long-established techniques such as glass painting, a rarity in residential work.

The studio is equally accomplished in both traditional and contemporary design. It has been the recipient of many awards, featured in many articles and was highlighted on HGTV. The studio was founded in Aspen and, while hardly limited to, it is very at home with mountain and western aesthetics. Each job is treated with the utmost focus and care.

As a furniture showroom and interior design firm, Home on the Range has favorite vendors where we know we can find great home furnishings and fabrics. Wesco Fabrics is one such company, and we’ve incorporated pieces from Wesco into many of our clients’ homes.

In the Western Mine Style-house to the right, we incorporated a coral Asian cabinet from Wesco to create a more eclectic look.

Dick Gentry, Vice President of Wesco Fabrics, explains the company best, saying:

“[Wesco Fabrics] travels the world’s best textile markets to source beautiful and unique fabrics for the window, chair and bed. For the past 17 years we have directly imported exotic furniture and accessories from Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, China, France, Holland, and even North Carolina. We are honored to serve top-level interior design companies such as Home on the Range.”

Look at some of these photos Wesco shared with us:

Home on the Range designers have traveled with Dick to Bali a number of times. Wesco Fabrics has hosted trips to Cannes on the French Riviera, Paris, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket Island, Koh Samui, a 10th century French chateau, Positano & the Amalfi Coast and Bali.

Hosting a fundraising concert for 75 people in a private residence sounds like a daunting task but with the help of the experienced Strings in the Mountains staff and the Home on the Range designers, the hostess, Carrie Hayden is pretty relaxed about the whole process.  Kathleen, my design assistant, and I met with Carrie Hayden to go over little additions we need to make in order to have each area of the house looking picture perfect!   We know the house intimately, having worked through every detail of the interior finishes and furnishings with our client, the Haydens, over the past 4 years.  It’s exciting to see it showcased for such a wonderful event.

I will arrive the afternoon of the affair to “fluff the pillows” and to help with the table arrangement and last minute touches.  White tablecloths with yellow napkins will create a simple yet vibrant backdrop for the colorful  arrangements made up of Colorado wild flowers that will grace the tables and enhance the feeling of being in a garden setting.  Marno’s Custom Catering will provide the appetizers and  dinner and One Fine Day will create the flower arrangements for the tables.

One of our biggest concerns is what the weather will do!  The plan is for cocktails to be served on the lower decks followed by a sit-down dinner at tables positioned on the lawn with spectacular views of the Steamboat Springs Ski area and the south valley towards Lake Catamount.   After dinner, the concert will be on the upper terraced stone patios.  If this monsoon weather pattern continues into next week we may be faced with bringing the event indoors and finding creative ways to seat 100 people for both dinner and the concert – not ideal but certainly doable.   We went through the contingency plans today, thinking about what chairs we will need and how to position them so everyone can see and hear the wonderful vocalist, Mark Masri.

If you are in Steamboat Springs that night you should definitely try to attend – it will be a magical night.  If you can’t attend I will let you know how it all goes!  I will be heading to Denver after the concert to be there for a 7:40 a.m. flight the next morning so it will take a few days for me to post my follow up to the evening!  I’ll post some pictures as well so you can see how much fun we had!

I am so excited about the Strings in the Mountains Fundraising Concert that will take place on July 28th.  This amazing event will take place at the home of my clients, John and Carrie Hayden. Their home is quite frankly, a masterpiece that was designed by architect, Joe Patrick Robbins, and my design team and I have had the pleasure of designing the interiors.

Mark Masri will appear with special guest Anne Cochran.

The Strings Music Festival Annual Encore fundraising event will provide you with the opportunity to enjoy a private concert, with vocalist Mark Masri and special guest Anne Cochran. While there you can take in the  Hayden home in Dakota Ridge while you enjoy dinner and drinks.

This tax-deductible fundraiser will support the Strings in the Mountains Music festival and provide you with cherished memories of gorgeous design and beautiful music.

Now in it’s 24th season, the Strings Music Festival presents over 55 concerts throughout the months of July and August. The concerts take place in the Strings Music Pavillion and throughout the Steamboat Springs community. By attending the fundraising concert, you are doing your part to support this important community cultural event.

I hope you will you will do your part by purchasing your tax-deductible ticket online. Check back soon to learn more about our preparations for the concert at the home of John and Carrie Hayden (pictured below).
