Principal/Lead Designer:

Lynne Barton Bier moved to Steamboat in 1988 with her husband Joe and her 3 month old daughter Payje. Lynne and Joe bought The Front Page, a gift store in downtown Steamboat Springs and Lynne’s Steamboat career in interior design was launched – well, not exactly launched, it started out quietly a room at a time –and then grew from there. In the past 23 years Lynne has created 3 successful home furnishing stores – The Front Page, Barton’s of Steamboat and Home on the Range. Lynne has worked with clients from around the world to help bring their dreams of a Steamboat home to reality.

Lynne grew up with a father who collected everything from Oriental rugs to Alaskan art. He took her to antique stores and art galleries and instilled in her a love of the search for unique, quality pieces from around the world. Living in Paris for two years in the 70s and then working in the Middle-East for two months as a translator added a passion for exotic travel to the mix. Lynne visited flea markets in Paris and London as well as souks and medinas from Marrakesh to Cairo to Damascus.

Not satisfied with just seeing the finished product, Lynne took every opportunity she could to see where and how things were made. Renting a farmhouse in Brittany for a summer provided the opportunity to visit the “cottage” industries and factories where lace and faience were made. In Rabat, Morocco she watched the extended family groups weaving rugs. A trip to Bali with the Wesco fabrics company exposed Lynne to small villages where she watched the carvers bring chunks of stone and wood to life. Most recently she visited the glass-blowing factories in Murano, Italy where artisans create the light fixtures she has been using in clients’ homes.

The passion for finding sources for unusual pieces and the interest Lynne has in listening to her clients’ vision, coupled with a love of good design, harmony and balance gives each of the homes Lynne works on its own unique, timeless look.

In the past 23 years, Lynne has given back to the community of Steamboat in a myriad of ways including:

• Board of directors for the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort

• Board of directors for Lowell Whiteman Primary School

• Girls to Women career seminar for Interior Design

• Donations to scores of non-profit organizations from Strings in the Mountains to the Yampa Valley Community Foundation

Designer:

Susan Howard has been an interior designer at Home on the Range since 2002, working on projects of all sizes and scope, including condominiums, townhouses, single family residences, a barn with a loft for entertaining and various commercial projects.

Before moving to the Yampa valley, Susan was an interior designer in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Westchester County, New York and Cincinnati, Ohio. Her 20 year design career includes projects in New England, Kiawah, South Carolina, the Midwest and East Texas.

Susan’s early design career was inspired by trips to the Frankfurt, Germany and Milan, Italy Furniture Fairs as well as trips to the High Point, NC and San Francisco furniture shows. Her extensive travels throughout Europe, Scandanavia, South America and the Far East continue to inform her designs with a fresh perspective. Her enthusiasm and extensive design experience have led many clients to become friends, long after her work is completed.

She lives with her husband, son and three dogs in a post and beam solar powered house she designed in the Mystic Valley near Steamboat Springs. Susan’s commitment to preserving Steamboat’s beautiful environment has sparked her efforts to promote green building practices and products.

Assistant Designer:

Kathleen Fledderjohn joined Home on the Range in 2009 and brought a depth of knowledge in soft goods and tile design to the team. With a background in and love for Art History, Kathleen has an experienced eye when it comes to balance, color composition and the use of light and texture.

After graduating, Kathleen moved to Steamboat and worked for a window treatment and bedding fabricator for years, learning the hands-on aspect of the business and which fabrics work the best for the different applications.

Kathleen then worked for a carpet and tile shop and learned about the various properties of carpet and tile as well as how to create detailed drawings for tile design to present to clients. Kathleen realized she had a knack for, and an interest in coming up with interesting tile designs that would also stand the test of time.

Kathleen’s attention to detail and her organizational skills coupled with her art history background and practical experience make her a wonderful addition to the Home on the Range team.

Bookkeeper and “Go To person”:

Sherry Brown is the one to go to with any questions on the day to day store operations and the billing details. Sherry has been with Home on the Range for 6 years and knows the ins and outs of our operation. Sherry is great at getting to the bottom of any question you may have. If she doesn’t know the answer she will search until she finds it!

Sherry has worked in Steamboat in a variety of hospitality industries from restaurants to Central Reservations and approaches everything she does with the same determination to do an excellent job.
