Guess what?  We are currently help renovate and remodel an old bunk house near Estes Park, CO!  The house is super funky, crazy and unique.  It began as one very small building that was a livery (where animals are kept and boarded) years and years and years ago.  From there, new rooms were added one by one, so each room is on its own level, with its own ceiling height, and it’s own shape and angle!  It’s crazy!  But so much fun to work on- we get to come up with ideas to update the bunk house, while at the same time keeping it funky and historical.  Here are some of the design inspirations we’re using!

At Home on the Range, we are lucky to get to work on projects of all shapes and sizes, from massive second homes to one-bedroom condos.  Each space has its own personality, and each project takes on its own story.  But, though all of our projects are beautiful and unique in their own ways, they all have one thing in common: they’re stationary.

So we daydream.

I have always been captivated by travel, and by the freedom that comes along with it.  RVs and campers have embodied this freedom for decades, and the idea of creating a “home on wheels” just absolutely delights me!  It’s like that very same feeling of freedom spills over into the design aspects- you can do just about anything you want!  I love the thought of making something so small but perfect in every way.  I love the thought of embodying a feeling in a space, and my favorite renovated campers do just that: they pinpoint America, the West, travel, comfort, and craftsmanship, and then drive them home all in one tiny little box.

Our good friend Ralph Lauren (well, we don’t know him, but we love his home goods) is a camper renovation master.  My Airstream daydreams mostly feature his designs.  The detail in his rolling rooms is minute, and I honestly think I could probably live in one of these.

I love the woodwork here, and the mix and match fabrics.  It gives me the feeling of riding in an upscale version of a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail.

Who WOULDN’T want to take a fishing trip in this baby?  Again, every detail has been perfected, and a solid “Masculine Modern Lodge” style has been achieved beautifully.  See the snowshoes in the back?  Love those!  I also love the subtle colors in this camper.

This is a little picture, but you can see how wonderfully Western it is!  The use of reclaimed wood with bold reds and blues make this camper a cowboy’s paradise!

Here’s another cowboy camper.  My favorite thing here is the way they hung the curtains, but look at the other elements as well- they just work!

I love the idea of making the bed into a nook with the use of curtains.  Also, the fairy lights make this space magical!

In this renovated bus, they really made use of the light from all of the windows.  This space just feel so comfortable, clean and airy!  I would love to drive around the country in this!

My favorite thing about this camper is the barn door.  Just wanted to share that.

So this little camper is provably too heavy to actually drive anywhere, but it’s beautiful nonetheless!  Look at the stained glass, and the hardware on the door!  Such a neat little space!

How exciting!  We have been featured in another publication this month!  This time, Lynne was asked to choose a favorite light fixture and describe what she loved about it and how she had used it in design.  The interview is featured in the “Bright Ideas” section of the magazine, along with a picture of Lynne, and a photo of the room she used it in.  Thanks so much for the opportunity Larger Than Light, we love publicity, and sharing our favorite things with other people!  To see the article, click on this link.  You will find the Bright Ideas piece on page 5, but the rest of the magazine is also worth a read!

We were so excited to learn on Monday evening that Lynne Bier (the principal/lead designer at Home on the Range) was voted one of the top designers in Steamboat Springs in the 2013 Best of the Boat contest!  Lynne took second place in the contest (which had over 4,200 voters), coming in just behind Irene Nelson, who has been designing in Steamboat Springs for decades, and who Lynne considers to be one of her role models.  Needless to say, it was a proud moment for her, and for all of us at Home on the Range!

The party, which was hosted by the Steamboat Pilot, was lots of fun.  The food was delightful, and so was the presentation… the video clips in between categories kept us laughing the whole time!  We want to say a big thank you to the Pilot for hosting the wonderful event, and an even bigger thank you to everyone in Steamboat (or elsewhere) who voted for Lynne this year in the Best of the Boat!  Steamboat is our home, and it has been a privilege to get to design here and to work with so many amazing people for so many years… and more to come!

Thanks again Steamboat, and congratulations to all of the other winners!

The next time you are in the market for a way to add a rustic, earthy touch to your home, the solution may be simpler than you imagined: doors.  You heard it here first, old doors are coming back in new ways.

You can instantly add both character and texture by re-purposing a pair of distressed doors as your headboard.  Build this headboard yourself from doors that have some deeper meaning to you (for instance, using doors from your childhood home), or just hunt for some really unique doors that speak to your style and taste.

Using distressed doors as furniture adds a one of a kind quality to any room (after all, no one will have the same doors as you!) It also brings character, style, and  a natural raw quality to your space.

If you’re in the market for something a little less eclectic, you can also achieve a great earthy look by using natural wood barn doors.

Temperatures are in the 70’s this weekend in Steamboat Springs, something that usually doesn’t happen until late May.  The warm temperatures are  getting me  in the mood to start preparing our outdoor living spaces so we can enjoy this gorgeous weather.  Here are five captivating spaces sure to inspire ideas for your own outdoor living haven in Colorado…or wherever your outdoor living space is!

It’s the beginning of a new year, which means many of us are making resolutions. For those of you who have resolved to organize your home for 2012, we want to offer helpful tips to do just that. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

Get furniture that serves multiple purposes, like a coffee table with storage inside, as House Beautiful suggests.

Similarly, if you’re running out of room in the bedroom, Better Homes and Gardens suggests taking advantage of the foot of your bed. A trunk adds instant storage.

Don’t ignore the details. Even the junk drawer can be organized with special drawer dividers, like House Beautiful shows.

As an interior design firm, Home on the Range understands that one important aspect of being a designer is helping people create functional, practical spaces for their lifestyle. A home should not only be beautiful, but also livable—all while reflecting the personality and style of its inhabitants.

Since  Steamboat is renown for its  skiing and snowboarding, and our clients love to spend time enjoying all the outdoor sports Steamboat has to offer, they naturally  need a place to keep their winter gear. We are always looking for storage solutions that suit the different spaces we have to work with.  Here are three ski and snowboard storage options we found for one of our current design projects :

Chinook four-pair boot and glove dryer

Del Sol Ski Rack

Del Sol Snowboard Rack

There are many options for storing winter gear, which is a necessity in Colorado homes. If you’re interested in both stylish and practical interior design for your home, contact Home on the Range to find out how we can help. Just click the “Like what you see?” button on the right side of the blog to send us a message.

The first post in our Design for the Western Lifestyle series will be about what we call the Refined Mountain Style. In Refined Mountain Style, the woods tend to be more finished. We often use cherry or alder for the doors and trim, and the beams are surfaced rather than left in the rough sawn or “crusty” state.

The furniture we incorporate into Refined Mountain Style is a little more European in feel, and the cabinetry is often a blend of natural woods with furniture-style painted and distressed pieces. As in all of our interiors, we will mix in touches of cowboy and lodge with Asian furniture pieces and European antiques to keep it interesting and eclectic. For visual examples, these are five spaces by Home on the Range Interiors that encompass Refined Mountain Style:

In this dining room, we used cherry for interior trim and ceiling paneling and incorporated Woodland dining chairs and sideboard.

This hall library shows an eclectic mix with a touch of Western with the twig light valance over the bookshelves, a painted door with iron clavos, an Asian cabinet and an oriental rug.

This Mountain Arts and Crafts guest bedroom uses a soft grey-green distressed paint on a tall wainscot mixed with indigenous moss rock on the fireplace to create a refined mountain look. The bed is framed by a cherry Arts and Crafts-style floating wall to give it a backdrop.

In this Lake Lodge home we mixed painted pieces from Woodland Furniture with soft floral fabrics to bring the mountain meadows viewed from the windows into the master bedroom.

In the adjacent bathroom we used rainforest green marble (which looks like twigs and branches in browns and greens) for the countertops and brought the mountain meadow feel back into the room with the fabric in the valances at the windows. The white painted distressed cabinetry keeps the room looking light and fresh, while the fir ceiling, reclaimed fir beams and alder trim bring back in the natural materials that are so important to the Western Design style.

Look for our next post in this series on Mountain Contemporary Style. If you’re searching for a designer who can translate your vision of a Western lifestyle into beautiful home décor, contact Home on the Range in Steamboat Springs, CO.
